Christmas dinner

We missed being with our family in Richmond this year, but we did get to celebrate with our Prague family - a bunch of our friends came over for Christmas dinner, and we had a great time! (thanks to Sunny for some of these pictures)
Shanna and her kitchen elves worked their magic...
We turned the downstairs into a big dining area...
Phil sliced the Christmas roast beast...
and Clark provided the lounge music on the kids' new microphone...

and after the kids went to bed, we broke out the Xbox for some Halo and Ms. Pac-Man action!

Christmas Day

Our Christmas morning started off at a reasonably decent hour, and then it was high energy for the next 14 hours! The kids loved seeing what Santa had brought and opening presents - and they were excited that Santa had eaten the cookies and left a little note for them. I was a little disappointed that Santa did not assemble the Barbie Island Princess Garden, because a good portion of my Christmas Day was spent putting that monstrosity together!Clark loves his new black and yellow bike (the "Stinger") and the only time we went outside was for him to ride in a little circle outside - notice his pajama pants still on.I am most excited about Clark's Hot Wheels set, probably more than he is.We had a great day and then got ready for all our friends to come over for dinner that night.

Christmas party

We've been a little behind on giving the Christmas updates, so here's some of what happened. We went to a very fun Christmas party last week at a new house in a new development near the airport - our friends recently moved there, and it was beautiful. It was hard to believe that we were still near Prague. The highlight was singing many Christmas carols while our friend Laura's dad played the piano - he was incredible.

While shopping...

I took the kids shopping for Shanna a few days before Christmas. Here's one of our first conversations:

Daddy: What should we get Mommy this year?
Clark: Gum!
Lucy: Chapstick!
Daddy: OK, anything else?
(pause)
Lucy: I know! We should get Mommy some space!

I guess Shanna's personal space has been getting invaded a little too much lately, and the kids have been hearing about it.

Merry Christmas!

Our little church presented us last week during the service with this beautiful Christmas ornament, thanking us for leading and pastoring Faith Community Church. It was a beautiful moment for us, thinking back to how God has blessed us this last year, especially with our church.
Thank you for how you have prayed for us and encouraged us to be here! To our Prague family, we love you and are so thankful for you. To our friends and family in places all over the world, we miss you and love you very much.

Merry Christmas from Phil, Shanna, Lucy, and Clark!!!

pinky-ruby

Pinky-Ruby has flipped! Thank-you all for your prayers. Pinky-Ruby was breech and this week she flipped. She is all set and ready to go. Please pray that she would stay in the correct position and that we would have an easy delivery with her. Also please pray for her health and that she would be healthy and a strong little girl that is ready to serve the Lord. Thank you for your care and concern!

new bed

We had originally took the side of Clark's crib off and converted it (even though it is not a convertible bed) into a toddler bed which we thought would last him until he moved into his built-in loft bed in his room, but things do not always work out as you plan with the baby on the way, and the terrifying idea that our own not-afraid-of-anything-climbing-hanging-spiderman would be sleeping 8 feet above the ground we decided to go ahead and invest in a real bed for this little guy. So off to Ikea we went and here it is his own bed in which Clark, Lucy and Phil put together. Now it is time to start working on pinky-ruby's room!

Christmas Fun!

This first week of vacation has been filled with Christmas fun. We started the week with homemade Christmas cookies, then had friends over for a Christmas craft, dinner and movie afternoon that included making ornaments, stocking and watching the Grinch (one of my all-time favorites). We have also had various play dates and a bit of shopping. And have made our first gingerbread house. Each day comes to a close with the lighting of the advent candles during dinner along with a Bible reading. And before bed we all gather around for a viewing of a true classic Christmas movie such as Rudolph or Frosty. We have had a blast and have really enjoyed being together making memories and establishing traditions.

Modern-Day Mary and Joseph

We had the privlege last weekend of visiting a refugee center, about 90 minutes north of Prague. YWAM (which you may have heard of recently - the site of one of the 2 shootings in Colorado was at their training facility) works regularly with about 100 refugees who live in this small town. They have a big Christmas party for the families, and we were in charge of the arts/crafts table.

Clark came with me, and Sasha joined us too (notice the two smaller shadows on the sidewalk)... Clark had a blast. He especially hit it off with some nice ladies from Iraq, as well as the dancers (see below).
The arts/crafts table went well, thanks to the girls who came with us. The kids loved making ornaments, stockings, and paper chains. We got to help pass out presents too. It was amazing to see how appreciative they were, and how happy they got to be in the midst of uncertain futures.

Many refugees were from Iraq, Chechnya, and the Sudan. Before we started the YWAM leader reminded us that Mary and Joseph were, in a sense, refugees who were displaced and needed aid.
It was a beautiful event and a wonderful way to close out our recent "season of parties."

Last of the parties?

Clark woke up this morning and he was EXCITED! It was really his birthday! He opened his presents and loved his new costumes from Papa and Yaya...
Faster than a speeding bullet...
After church tonight, we had a family dinner and some cake for Clark's REAL birthday. Yay! He's 3!!!

Check out our new box on the right - fill it in, you'll get our prayer emails!

More parties

Clark's school had a Christmas party too - they were psychedelically celebratory with their tie-dyes. They sang some songs for the parents and then we had snacks and juice. It was a rager!

Week-in-Review

We've had a fantastically busy week, full of parties and sweets! Here are some more highlights: Lucy's birthday was actually on Tuesday, which means she had a school party and got to wear the treasured "Birthday Necklace" all day at school. Then a party that night at our house with special friends, where she modeled several of her new princess dresses from Papa and Yaya!

Team Christmas Dinner

Dot leaves this morning for the States for Christmas, so our team had our Christmas party last night before she left. We decided to party with the kids (as opposed to getting babysitters), so it was definitely louder and more chaotic, but I think lots more fun too. The kids used the Little People nativity scene to act out the Christmas story, we all opened presents, and then we feasted on a fantastic dinner prepared by Shanna and others - beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, salad, pumpkin cheesecake! The kids watched Frosty on TV and we all shared what our favorite Christmas traditions were, either currently or growing up. I talked about our Davis tradition of bowling after Christmas, followed by Bill's Barbecue!

Clark's birthday party at school

Poor Clark. He's now had 2 birthday parties and still isn't three. He's a bit confused, but in just 1 more day he'll finally be 3. His school's last day before break was yesterday, so Shanna and Clark made cupcakes, and I brought them for his class. It was fun to stick around school more than usual - and Clark did a great job passing out the cupcakes to his friends.

"Rock the Baby"

That was the name of Lucy's first-ever Christmas performance at school, where she played the role of an angel. And a beautiful one at that! It was great to watch her with all the other primary school kids, singing, smiling, and having fun.

Pictures from Uganda

The Ebola outbreak in Uganda seems to have peaked, according to our friends there. Many people have dedicated today as a day to fast and pray for the country, the people, the end to the outbreak. Please join us.

Some of Scott's pictures from the last week have now been posted on ABC's news website. They say much more than I could ever manage to write:

It is a privilege and honor to serve in the same organization as Scott and Jennifer, who have to take World Harvest's mission statement more literally than I do: "Laying down our lives to proclaim the Kingdom of Jesus Christ through preaching, healing and equipping."

A landscaper like nun other

We're pleased to announce we've broken ground on our new church building...

Just kidding! I couldn't resist posting this picture that was the headline story on the Prague Monitor - a daily email that I receive with all the current events for the area. This was for a story on how many Catholic churches are finally getting compensation for property that was seized during communism. Some of their land is being returned as well.

Now I know who to hire for future yardwork.

A Welcome Bright Spot

One of the best moments of the last month was at the swim gala yesterday. In the midst of lots of sickness, sadness, and heavy hearts for friends around the world, we were able to celebrate a moment of victory with some dear friends here, the Falks. Al is the principal of the high school at Riverside and Connie is one of Lucy's teachers this year. Their oldest daughter Andrea was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of thyroid cancer in August and underwent surgery and an intense radioactive treatment that put her in isolation in the hospital for seven days - and she's only 12!

Many people here in Prague have been praying for Andrea and the Falks, and Shanna's Bible study has been privleged to have Connie come this semester and study with them.

Yesterday at the swim gala, Andrea was able to not only compete, but she won her swim event! At the awards ceremony there were lots of tears of joy for how God has taken care of her and sustained the whole family. Way to go, Andrea!

Swimmingly Great!

Today was a monumental day in the Davis family - it was Lucy's first swim meet! Actually, it was more of a "swim gala," as it was billed, since "swim meet" sounds a little too competitive. Lucy did a great job - she was in 2 races, one with a kickboard and one with a noodle, swimming backwards!
Lucy at the awards ceremony - she got chocolate.

Clark was delirious... I'm not kidding.

Uganda in the news

Just after I posted the information about Ebola in Uganda (see below), the Myhres posted a link to an ABC News online article about Dr. Jonah Kule - http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Germs/story?id=3970795&page=1

The article is even linked from the ABC News homepage, which is remarkable, given how little focus this part of the world usually receives! Keep praying...

Call to Prayer

If you get our prayer emails, you know that we asked for prayer for health - both for our team here and for our friends working with World Harvest Mission in Uganda. Thanks for your prayers!

We'd still ask that you continue to pray for the Uganda team. They have had an incredibly hard couple of weeks with an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus. Their team has had to leave their village, except for the team leaders - Scott and Jennifer. A catastrophic blow came on Tuesday when their friend and medical colleague Dr. Jonah Kule died from the virus.

Their blog - http://www.paradoxuganda.blogspot.com/ - has been heart-wrenching, challenging, uplifting, and sobering to read, just to name a few emotions. It has put all of our "problems" here in Prague in perspective, and I'd encourage you to read their blog and pray for them. Thanks!

birthday party

Lucy's birthday is December 11 and Clark's is December 16, and the last two years I have asked them sometime in November what they would like to do for their birthdays. This year was no different the main question I needed to ask was whether or not they wanted a party together or if they each wanted their own party... and really without much hesitation they started screaming, "together... with all of our friends!" and "together a very big party!!!" So last weekend we had a together party, with lots of friends. Half of the party was decorated in princesses and mermaids and the other half was decorated in Spiderman. We rented a children's play place, had pizza, ice cream and cake. Not to mention pinatas and goody bags. Fun was had by all especially Lucy and Clark!
